San Diego's history began with the Kumeyaay people before Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo named the area San Miguel in 1542, which was renamed San Diego in 1602 by Sebastián Vizcaíno. The first permanent Spanish settlement was established in 1769, and the town was later acquired by the U.S. in 1848 following the Mexican-American War. A boom in development after the arrival of the Santa Fe Railroad in 1885, and especially during and after World War II, established San Diego as a modern city with a diverse economy today.
